It is interesting to note that the marriage certificate states the profession of the witnesses as:

"serviente nella chiesa Parrochiale di S Publio della Floriana".

I would normally expect friends or family to witness the wedding.

Also, the certificate is dated November 22, 1873 but there is a footnote inscription in Italian which confirms that the marriage actually took place on October 21, 1873 (as per information supplied by genealogist Joe Borg).

These anomalies lead me to speculate that the couple had a secret wedding.
